Human rights group reports cases of mental, physical abuse at Red Onion, Wallens Ridge state prisons
A human rights advocacy group has asked Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Brian Moran for answers after reports of physical and mental abuse were sent to them by prisoners at Red Onion and Wallens Ridge prisons in Wise County.
A copy of the letter completed by Interfaith Action for Human Rights to Moran said correctional officers at Wallens Ridge assaulted an identified inmate because he was a Muslim.
Another prisoner who was transferred from Red Onion to Wallens Ridge said the guards there spit in his food, beat him with belts, and denied him access to clean clothes and a shower for weeks.
A total of seven prisoners from the facilities have lodged complaints with state corrections officials.
