Winds and rain from ‘Fred’ impacting Mountain Empire with flood, tornado watches
Flash flood and tornado watches were posted for the majority of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia Tuesday afternoon as remnants of Tropical Storm Fred moved into the region.
The National Weather Service in Morristown said heavy rains and potential mudslides in the mountainous terrain were a possibility from the rain system that stretched over hundreds of miles.
Preliminary data shared by the agency had forecasts of 1 to 3 inches of rain for the Tri-Cities area while higher amounts were being predicted for the mountains of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina.
A tornado watch was posted by the NWS office in Blacksburg for the Southwest Virginia counties of Smyth, Wythe, and Grayson, among others, just after 1 p.m.
