Johnson City joins lawsuit against social media companies
The Johnson City Commission approved joining a lawsuit against social media companies over the impacts of social media on students and the school system. The commissioners voted unanimously Thursday night to join other local governments and school districts in the litigation against multiple social media companies, including Facebookâs parent company Meta as well as Snapchat, TikTok. The Johnson City Board of Education had already voted to join the lawsuit earlier this month. More than 335 school districts in multiple states are also party to the suit. That includes the Sullivan County Board of Education. The lawsuit’s main goal is to force social media companies to tighten controls for under age users, as opposed to a monetary settlement.
