Carter County escapee charged with first-degree murder of missing Elizabethon man

Carter County jail escapee Billy Fletcher told officers where to locate the remains of missing Elizabethton man Victor Birchfield.

Fletcher is now charged with his murder, abuse of a corpse, and theft over $2,500 following those indictments in Johnson County court.

In a mid-June update, Sheriff Mike Fraley said Fletcher and Birchfield came into contact with each other after Fletcher walked off a work detail last month. Fletcher was arrested last week in Greenville County, South Carolina and Birchfield’s car was also recovered.
