North Carolina suspect accused of killing Smyth sheriff’s deputy
A 7-year veteran of the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office was killed by a traffic stop suspect on Friday afternoon outside the town of Marion.
Information from the Virginia State Police and Marion Chief of Police John Clair said Hunter Reedy, 27, walked back to the suspect’s car when they became agitated and gunfire was exchanged.
The suspect that Clair said was from North Carolina is being held by law enforcement. Commonwealth’s Attorney Phillip Blevins says he anticipates filing one count of aggravated murder and four counts of attempted aggravated murder against him.
“I lost a deputy. A brave hero,” said Sheriff Chip Shuler, describing Reedy who leaves behind a wife and three children.
Two Smyth County deputies were on the scene and assisted by four Marion policemen. The other deputy received medical treatment and according to Chief Clair is recovering well.
