Chilhowie Native and Virginia State Police Trooper Killed in the Line of Duty
Chilhowie native and Virginia State Police Trooper Lucas Dowell has been killed in the line of duty during a drug raid in Cumberland County. The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. Monday near the Farmville line
Dowell, a tactical team member was assisting the Piedmont Regional Drug and Gang Task Force execute a search warrant when a suspect started shooting.
Dowell was shot and taken to a local hospital where he later died.
The suspect, 44-year-old Corey Johnson was killed when police returned fire. Johnson’s remains have been taken to the medical examiners office in Richmond for an autopsy.
The two officers who fired their weapons have been place on administrative leave, per police policy
No other troopers were injured during the incident.
Dowell graduated the Virginia State Police’s 122nd Basix session in November 2014. He was a member of the Appomatox Division Tactical Team.
This is the Department’s 66th line of duty death. Funeral arrangements are pending.
